Day 5: Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy
Today was just kind of easy. It was fairly long (about 12 miles) and fairly muggy but it stayed cloudy and never got really hot. The terrain was relaxed (minus some stairways right at the end that were bullshit, picture to follow) and I was able to make good time. I was in sight of the ocean for at least 85% of the walk and there was virtually zero traffic of any kind. The paths and boardwalks that dominated this leg were car free and there were just a few bicyclists out. There were also almost no other walkers but I did get to meet a donkey named Paolo. At least I assume that was his name. He looked like a Paolo. After Paolo (who brayed when I left him and it made me feel special) it was really quiet. The sound of the ocean and an occasional bird were all I heard for the first half of the walk.
There was one other pilgrim up there!! I eventually caught them and they were just a local out for a walk.
Just me, myself and I
At around the midway point I had to take a ferry across the water to Spain. That turned out to be a bit of a goat rodeo. The big ferry wasn’t running and you needed to take a smaller ferry but there were no signs indicating that. What there was were two or three different people trying to explain that to you but also trying to get you to use another company for only 10 Euro. Everyone was confused (yes, I finally bumped into other walkers at this point) and I wandered back to the original ferry site where there were four older ladies sitting on steps. I showed them my ticket and using Google Translate (thanks Zuck, you’re kind of an evil putz but that app is solid) they were able to explain everything to me. I knew a avo would not lie to me. I was even able to sort of help a couple of other folks find their way.
The ferry. FYI, there was no cafe on board.
The Spanish portion of today’s leg was more of the same, ocean views and easy terrain. I got into A Guarda and was starting to slow down a little. Then the last little push had about 4 of these (I only took a picture of the first). :
I’m pretty sure the young lady on the left had just given up and was going to stay the night there
Steep flights of stairs are bullshit. I know that’s not a hot take but I think I’d be neglecting my duties as a red hot traveler influencer if I didn’t point that out. Do better Europe.
Anywho, got to the hotel and I’m off to find somewhere open to get some dinner. A ton of stuff closes over here on Sundays. I had forgotten that little nugget of info. I’ve been doing a pretty poor job on my nutrition so far this trip. I’m not eating nearly enough and that’s going to catch up with me soon if I don’t get it corrected.
I forgot to take a picture of my OOTD this morning but since I’m wearing the exact same thing tomorrow (laundered of course) you’ll all get to check it out then. I’m going to try and remember to do that and also try and remember to accept this walk for what it’s going to be. If this is a journey with a lot of simplicity and solitude then so be it, as long as I get to see more donkeys.
Fort Herbie. Okay, that’s probably not what it’s called but if you came to this blog for historical fact you’re in for a rude awakening.
I’m not positive but I’m pretty sure that’s Mt. Fuji
